The legend of the African Baobab is in the story of a tree
that wished to be the greatest tree in
Africa. The wise spirit heard its request, reached
down from the sky and pulled the tree from the
earth and placed it upside-down. Now it said, I
have made you unique.
In return, you will grow strong and become an African land
mark, known as the tree of life and many will
prosper from your growth. The African Baobab is
one of the world’s hardiest trees, thriving in
even the most arid environment. It is also the
tree under which some Africans traditionally meet
to decide issues of common concern.
For many indigenous tribes it is the embodiment of wisdom,
reverence, teaching, respect, leadership,
longevity, health and life. The name Baobab means
“The time when man began” and it is therefore no
wonder that the San people associate it with the
origins of creation. |
